- Disconnect from 5GHz Wi-Fi and switch to 2.4GHz
- Remove the physical SIM tray from the side of the phone
- Force-close any VPN app running a global proxy in the background
The system will ask you to rename the new line. Replace the default label like “Personal” with Sweden Telia. On a -5°C street in Stockholm, a clear English label makes it much quicker to find the right line without fumbling in the cold.
Stay on the cellular settings screen and keep the switch for this new line turned off for now. Do not let the phone start searching for a supported network before you are in the destination country. The validity period begins the moment the line connects to a supported carrier, and the 7- or 15-day countdown starts immediately.
Some European carriers using Ericsson’s DCP platform charge strictly in 24-hour blocks. If you switch the line on at 8:00 p.m., even without using any data, the system may still deduct a full day at 8:00 p.m. the next evening. Save the APN truphone.com in your notes as a backup.
Check the list of roaming partners in the confirmation email. In Sweden, look for Telenor. In neighboring Denmark, the corresponding network is TDC. Take a photo of the QR code using someone else’s phone, or print the confirmation email on paper in case you need it later.
Long-pressing an image inside your photo gallery to scan it can trigger parsing errors. What gets extracted is often just a string of meaningless hexadecimal characters. Use the main camera to scan the code from another screen or from paper, and a 12MP wide-angle lens will convert it into a digital signal in half a second.

Three Steps to Get Online
The plane touches down on runway 3 at Arlanda Airport. Unbuckle your seatbelt, take out your phone, and switch off airplane mode after a 10-hour flight. If your phone drops service in a basement and jumps back to your home-country physical SIM, it can easily trigger roaming charges as high as 100 SEK per MB.
Open the settings page for that line and turn on Roaming de dados. Travel eSIMs work through roaming architecture. Without that switch enabled, the device can be blocked from the local carrier’s network entirely.
Once the 5G icon appears in the top-right corner, run a speed test. Download speed should hover around 280Mbps, with upload near 45Mbps. Loading a 45MB high-resolution offline map of Stockholm then takes under two seconds.
In 2026, the main commercial 5G bands are 3.5GHz and 700MHz. Open Voz e dados and manually select 5G On. At Arlanda Terminal 5, the heavy glass façade does not block low-band 700MHz very much, so the connection remains stable even when you walk into Starbucks in the arrivals hall.
If the phone stays stuck on 3G or LTE for a full minute, go into network selection and turn off automatic search. After the screen spins for about 15 seconds, the device should display a local carrier whitelist:
- Telia: more than 8,500 physical sites, covering 99% of populated areas
- Tele2: very dense urban small-cell deployment, with gaming latency often around 12ms
- Telenor: reliable for cross-border travel across the Scandinavian peninsula
- Tre: has dedicated penetration coverage for basement restaurants in Stockholm’s Old Town
Select Telia or Tele2 manually to force registration. The modem sends a hexadecimal access request to the local signaling tower, and full authentication is usually completed within 10 seconds. The signal indicator changes from two hollow bars to four solid ones, confirming that network registration is complete.
If you have full signal but webpages still will not load, the system may have failed to pull the correct gateway address from the profile. Open the Rede de dados celulares menu and enter the APN exactly as saved in your notes: dados globais.
Leave the username and password fields blank. Scroll to the bottom, tap reset once, then enter the APN again. Toggle airplane mode once to refresh the gateway configuration. In less than a second, WhatsApp usually changes from “Connecting” to receiving messages.
When hundreds of people crowd around the baggage claim area, hundreds of devices are all competing for channel resources from the indoor distributed antenna system above. It is very common for a congested 5G connection to fall back to 4G. Do not panic and tap the red button that says delete eSIM.
The 20-digit ICCID on that card is single-use. Deleting the eSIM is effectively the same as throwing away a paid activation code. If the connection is unstable, use physical troubleshooting steps instead:
- Turn on airplane mode for 30 seconds, then turn it off
- Change the preferred network from 5G to 4G LTE
- Hold the power button and volume up for 10 seconds to force a full restart
- Close more than 15 idle apps in the background to free memory
Once you board the Arlanda Express, the train cuts through endless pine forest at 200 km/h. Tower handoffs may introduce a brief 100ms delay, but the connection is still strong enough to support a 15-minute HD video call.
That call uses about 300MB of data, leaving plenty of room within a 15GB package. If Wi-Fi calling is enabled on your original physical SIM, Sweden’s 5G data connection can feed your home number in reverse, allowing you to answer calls from home without paying roaming voice charges.
As you pass the vending machine selling physical SIM cards outside 7-Eleven, a 10GB Comviq prepaid SIM is listed at 299 SEK. If your phone is already running at 280Mbps, installing the eSIM in advance saves you from taking out your passport and standing in line in the cold for 15 minutes just to verify your identity.
Go down to the underground train platform, where the two-meter-thick concrete vault blocks almost all outdoor signal. Tele2 has deployed 2.1GHz indoor micro-antennas in the tunnel. The device keeps scanning every 5 milliseconds, and the handoff gap is short enough that it will not trigger the red 460-latency warning in mobile games.
Once the battery drops below 15%, the system may automatically disable power-hungry 5G millimeter-wave searching and lock the phone to the more efficient 4G band. Plug in a 10,000mAh power bank from your bag, and the supply stabilizes at 5V/3A.
Open battery settings and turn off Low Power Mode. With full modem power restored, the 5G icon lights up again in the top-right corner. Tap the blue SJ app icon, and in three seconds your 2:15 p.m. e-ticket to Gothenburg appears on screen.
